WFMW: Backwards Day

So today is Backwards Day on Works For Me Wednesday so here is my plaintive plea. In the spirit of books and things. How do you organize your books? Better yet how do you put them so the little kids can put them back organized?

This is a great question--I wish you had more comments.

One thing I learned was that books for the youngest children--small board books--really should be kept in a tub or basket, not lined up on a shelf. I used to spend 20 minutes everyday organizing those tiny little books. It was not a good use of my time.

My new idea (sorry, I haven't implemented it yet, so I can't report on its success or lack thereof) is to put colored dot stickers on the books spines (as they do at the library). Red dot books (fewer pictures, more words) will go on one shelf and blue dot books (more pictures, fewer words) will go on the other. The only tricky thing is that I would like to group the books by size as well as by reading level and I'm not sure how to do that. (Well, I know how to do that, but I don't know how to get my kids to do that.)

ha ha ha ha! childrens books don't get organized. it's been a sorely losing battle in my house. my only solution is grit my teeth and persevere until they get a bit older and can pick them up by themselves. however, the other day i had had it with the books everywhere and did a massive clean up with the two older girls (6,4) and found a couple of their favorite books with pages torn out so my husband ripped them in half right in front of them and threw them away. they were upset and crying but i'm telling you the books have been mostly neatly put away ever since then (they don't want any more books in the trash can). sort of dramatic and maybe it won't work for everyone but...ya never know.
