Clip On Thermometer

So I was looking for something for a friend and I saw this item. Apparently you can just clip it to a kid's clothing so there is contact with the skin. Then you can check their temperature continuously. It will beep if it loses contact. One of the pictures I saw the kid had it clipped to the top of the diaper. The one annoying thing is it beeps if the temp goes up one degree. I don't know if that is one single beep or what. But for less than $20 I think it is a good deal.

Home Made Dandruff Remedies

So Tipnut has another great set of tips! This time it is homemade Dandruff remedies. I particularly like this because once or twice a year I have a little problem and none at all the rest of the year. I like the idea of just using the things I have around!

Math Literature

Recently I discovered a few math story books that the kids loved. The first was Fraction Action. It dealt with simple fractions in real life situations. It dealt with groups and life. Then we read Subtraction Action. This was a great book that dealt with simple subtractions, chain subtraction (10-5-3) and borrowing. The stories and illustrations are quite entertaining and engaging. There are more books by this author that I will be checking out soon. These are books we can read again and I will be using for ever kid!

Flight of the Conchords: the First Season

NerdDad and I have been watching Flight of the Conchords - The Complete First Season and I have to say that I love it. Going into it I already knew that I really found their music funny but I was prepared to dislike the series. I was afraid it would just be very foul and stupid but surprisingly it wasn't! It was silly but it was also very witty and just hilarious. I have a feeling that we will be seeing this again and will be waiting to see the second season when it comes out.

Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

My kids and I just finished this book and it was really good. One of the aspects I appreciated the most was how the author was very clear about the unknown aspects of the wonders. Lynn Curlee made the subject come alive with really great illustrations and lots of facts. She was clear in defining the line between what we "think" they were like and what we know. This ties in real well with SOTW year 1 but it would be great as just a quick pick up and read. We will definitely be using this for the younger ones when they get a bit older (2 and 11 months are a little young;). This is a read aloud just because of the foreign names. A first grader could definitely read this to you if you are willing to jump in with the names.

Great $1 Organizing Finds

Better Homes and Gardens has a great online article that shows how you can organize both a child's closet and an adult closet using items you can find at the Dollar Store. I particularly like the baskets with key chain hooks and the wire rack for card in a craft closet.

Cool Crafty Rocket

The Bear Necessities has made the coolest knit rocket ship. This would make a great gift for a one year old, if you happen to be crafty (hint, hint for any of you knitters who would like to get the NerdPud something for her impending birthday;). This grew out of Lucy's desire to make something for her son's room and now the blogosphere can benefit. Just go over to her blog, The Bear Necessities, and follow the pattern she has put up. I really need to learn how to knit!

Favorite Books?!?!?

I think I am in love with some new books! Everyone knows that I love The Well Trained Mind and use it as a guide for my homeschooling. I also use Story of the World for my history spine. So this is all well and good for your kids but what about those of us who missed out on this type of rich education? I personally am reading along the kids but I would like my classical education to not take another 12 years.

Well, it seems I am not alone. Susan Wise Bauer has written The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had. This goes over improving reading skills, creating a reading schedule, and book lists. To complement this, she has also authored The History of the Ancient World: From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome. This is written in the same delightful style as Story of the World but just a little more maturely. I checked it out from the library to see if it was worth the buy and it is! It is easy to just pick and read a little, go chase the kids (or whatever you all have to do) and then come back and read some more.

So if any of you feel a bit ripped off in the education arena, do something about it. After all you are a responsible adult;). Go check out these books!
